Movie of the Day – MacGruber

It’s a silly comedy day at Another Plot Device.  To my chagrin, I love stupid comedies.  In fact I adore stupid action comedies.  MacGruber is definitely in that category of dumb fun movies that is the source of much derision from people and is mainly seen by teens who only go to the movie to text during it, which is odd.  I can see why this movie didn’t get a lot of business at the theater, I mean it’s based off of a 60 second skit from Saturday Night Live where Will Forte plays a MacGyver like characters who constantly dies at the end of an episode because of his idiocy.  So taking that concept, which is funny in the small snippets of the show, and stretching it out to 90 minutes is bit daunting.  So picking this movie up in the five dollar bin at Blockbuster (they still exist), I was, pleasantly surprised by this movie.

Movie of the Day – Real Genius

This is one of those movies that escaped my memory until a few nights ago when it was late at night AMC was playing some movies from the 80s.  I couldn’t mistake the sound from the television as one of my favorite “It’s That Guy” actors William Atherton.  So much to my enjoyment, the movie that was playing was Real Genius, comedy film that was a unique gem of the 80s and remembered fondly for its quirkiness and 80s humor.  I don’t typically pick a lot of movies to write about from the 80s, not comedies anyways.  No sadly for me I remember more of the action films that set the standards for violence and those wonderful synth-pop infused music soundtracks.  Others might view that era more for the coming of age films and teen comedies that started to capture the youth market, but ultimately it’s all subjective.  I do admit, that I rather enjoy the offbeat comedies that the 80s produced and Real Genius is one of those comedies.
