Movie of the Day – Anvil! The Story of Anvil

I am not much of a metal music fan.  I don’t have the long hair, tattoos, and my head hurts sometimes if I try and head bang.  I know it makes me seem fucking old but seriously, not much of a metal fan.  So I was never familiar with the band that the documentary is about and frankly, so are a lot of people as well.  Anvil has been rocking in obscurity for decades to most of the music loving public, but they have influenced some of the most well-known metal bands to date.  Metallica and Slayer are successful in their own rights, each band admires the influence that Anvil has had on them.   If a band has this much influence on our current music, why such obscurity?  Why isn’t this band headlining major music and metal events across the world?  A little thing like lack of fame might be enough to derail dedicated bands, but there is something special about a band that will go through hell and still come out rocking even when things look grim.  That is the story of Anvil.

Movie of the Day – Pirate Radio

It’s a lazy Sunday for one and all, maybe just me, but whatever.  So it’s one of those days where you just kick back, read a book, put on some music and relax.  In my case it means that I watch a movie and write about it.  I decided on Pirate Radio solely for ensemble cast and amazing soundtrack in the movie.  This movie boasts around 60 tracks of music all stemming from the 60s which covers American rock and British rock.  Aside from the soundtrack, it also about the power of music and those who follow sound and spread the noise throughout the land.  This movie didn’t do great at the box office, but it still has a lot of charm and damn entertaining.

Movie of the Day – Air Guitar Nation

You know you have done something like this before.  Don’t lie to us and say you have never grabbed the nearest broom or bat or some other long phallic object and started shredding on it as your favorite guitar solo comes to the crescendo of their wild and crazy solo.  It’s cool guys and girls, no need to be embarrassed as the practice of air guitar is as old as rock music itself.  We all in some way want to be like the rock stars of yesteryear or today.  Getting our one moment in a song to show our metal and prove that we are some sort of guitar.  While we all can’t be talented enough to actually make music on a guitar, there are few out that make the act of air guitar an art form that rivals that of actually rocking out.  Air Guitar Nation follows those that rock the air harder than any living person alive.  It takes the private act of air guitar out of our mom’s basement and into the stage where the mighty have stood.

Movie of the Day – Six-String Samurai

Kind of keeping with the theme of music movies, today’s is going to be about a little diamond in the rough that is mainly a cult classic to some and just another trash movie by others.  While this movie is about some absurd quest to find the new King of Rock and Roll, it is comedy that centers around the musical movements of our time and does so in a funny way.  Six-String Samurai is more of a comedy action film than anything else.  The movie is cult classic by the very definition and some either love it or hate it.  The movie has a certain charm to it through all the absurdness and terribly acted parts, but it’s a fun post-apocalyptic ride through the barren wasteland wielding a sword and a guitar.
