Movie of the Day – INNI

In two days, I will be attending yet another live show from one of my favorite bands ever.  I do mean ever.  Sigur Ros has this unexplainable grasp on me, somehow captivating me and pulling me into their ethereal sound, a constant rush of pure euphoria takes me over.  I have seen them live twice, with Thursday’s at Starlight Theater in KC being my most anticipated concert for them since they perform beautifully outside.  A venue fitting for their transcendent sound.

So today I wanted to bring up their second movie/film/documentary, a followup to their first film Heima.  INNI is much more intimate, often claustrophobic look at their intense performance.  We substitute the lush backdrop of Iceland for the intimate venue performance, often putting us right in the mix of their intensity.  Heima, which I have talked about twice before, was more about what make Sigur Ros the band that they are.  From the influences of their surroundings to the culture they have fostered with their music.  INNI strips it all away, given us the raw power that they generate when performing.  It isn’t so much a movie, but just an entry to a diary, something that has a lot more meaning since it isn’t following a narrative, just the pure performance of the band on the stage.

If you aren’t a fan of Sigur Ros, that’s cool, but if you have never listened to them I would suggest giving them a listen.  They are experimental, progressive, and absolutely enthralling.  I couldn’t imagine a more perfect band out there in the musical landscape.  Check out INNI if you can, I promise it will just take you away with their sound.

Movie of the Day – Shut Up and Play the Hits

I never realized that watching the end of a band, one as amazing as LCD Soundsystem, would be one of  my favorite and touching documentaries in 2012.  Say what you will of the band, fan or not, but this sort of intimacy and outright passion that the documentary follows is just truly compelling and meaningful.  Shut Up and Play the Hits captures everything I love about the band and hits the right emotional chords in a fantastic concert/band documentary.  There I said it.  But I do have more to say so hit the jump.

Movie of the Day – Disco Godfather

Put yo weight on it!

Time for a funky time with another blaxploitation flick and we are going to groove to the sounds of fury with Disco Godfather.  Rudy fucking Ray Moore is back and kicking all sorts of ass while making sure the tunes are spinning folks.  God I love this genre of film!

Music Video of the Day – Thriller

Yup, that’s right, Michael Jackson’s Thriller is the movie of the day.  One of the best music videos around that managed to incorporate horror movie elements and even getting Vincent Price to lend his voice to the work.  Werewolves, zombies, creepy house, the occult, and a meta movie within a movie, this is the one of the best musical horror movie around.  Yeah it’s only 14 minutes, but are you going to argue with the King of Pop?

Movie Review – Miami Connection

Get ready for the reunion tour of a lifetime.  Getting the band back together, the ass kicking, taekwondo orphans, mega rock band Dragon Sound, is being resurrected for a brand new audience for some of the best 80s music around.  Synth playing, mullet rocking, guitar shredding, pop infectious lyrics will get you jumping out of your seats, right before you are jump kicked back from the stage as Dragon Sound not only rocks the stage, but also rocks the criminal underworld and their “bad” cocaine in the film Miami Connection.

Movie of the Day – Repo! The Genetic Opera

No you are not having a case of deja vu.  There happens to be two movies with the same premise.  This murder musical from 2008 and then the 2010 Repo Men movie which is exactly the same fucking premise only without the catchy musical tunes and comical murder scenes.  So with that cleared up, time for a little musical accompaniment to go along with my 17th horror movie post.

Movie of the Day – Time After Time

Lyin’ in my bed I hear the clock tick
And think of you
Caught up in circles confusion
Is nothing new
Flashback warm nights
Almost left behind
Suitcase of memories
Time after

Sometimes you picture me
I’m walking too far ahead
You’re calling to me I can’t hear
What you’ve said
Then you say go slow
I fall behind
The second hand unwinds

If you’re lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I’ll be waiting
Time after time

If you’re lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I’ll be waiting
Time after time

After my picture fades and darkness
Has turned to gray
Watching through windows
You’re wondering if I’m okay
Secrets stolen from deep inside
The drum beats out of time

If you’re lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I’ll be waiting
Time after time

You said go slow
I fall behind
The second hand unwinds

If you’re lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I’ll be waiting
Time after time

If you’re lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I’ll be waiting
Time after time

Time after time
Time after time
Time after time

I couldn’t resist :)

Movie of the Day – Top Gun

Today, we lost an amazing director.  A man whose nail biting, tense action thrillers have been a favorite of mine for a long time.  Tony Scott died Sunday evening and reports are coming in about the circumstances of his death, his suicide by jumping off a bridge, possibly brought on by his recent brain tumor discovery.  It’s hard to see someone go like Tony Scott who has brought us amazing films that have become iconic.  Days of Thunders, Beverly Hills Cop II, Man on Fire, Crimson Tide, True Romance and countless others.  Today, this post is about Top Gun, one of his best films, even with all the bromancing that has come out of that film, he still managed to create an amazing movie about fighter pilots that is both intense with action scenes and meaningful with the bromantic scenes.

It also managed to have one of the most kick ass soundtracks with Kenny Loggins. Berlin, and that theme song that just fucking shreds.  It is the encapsulation of 80s filmmaking and forever will be remembered for undercut subtexts of shirtless volleyball playing for no reason what so ever.  Enjoy the medley of clips and soundtracks.

RIP Tony Scott.

Movie of the Day – Last Days

Gus Van Sant always strikes me as a divisive director.  His work is minimalist at times, but also extremely experimental, often choosing to a stripped down approach to directing with dreamlike realism.  Elephant was a movie that felt more like a vivid dream with the documentary approach to depicting a high school massacre.  Last Days follows in the same foot steps of Van Sant’s previous films Gerry and Elephant, essentially closing his Death Trilogy.  What you see is an introspective look on the last days of a musician reminiscent of Kurt Cobain.  We watch the collapse of a human being coping with personal demons, fame and his place in life.
