Movie of the Day – The Lost Boys

Today’s post is more or less inspired by the recent Mondo poster releases.  You got to love this company and their stable of artists who just turn out some amazing prints like today’s:

Lost Boys 1a

Now I am a buyer of all things Mondo and I do have a certain fondness for this movie, along with the Corey’s and Sutherland who made a killer vampire movie.  This print though, doesn’t scream The Lost Boys, mainly cause of the bat.  While excellent, I was drooling over Phantom City Creative’s secondary print, which I am currently bidding on Ebay for:

Lost Boys 1b

Now that is what I call a perfect poster that reflects the pure 80s feel of this movie.  The Lost Boys though will always conjure up images of one thing in particular for me.  One thing that defines this vampire movie as one of the best out there.  Sure it could be the Goonies like feel amongst the vampire slayers, the gritty, punk aesthetic the vampires have or the sheer insanity of the violence and ensuing battle that happens near the end of the movie.

Movie of the Day – Dead Alive

To think, there was a time before The Hobbit, before King Kong and before The Lord of the Rings Trilogy when Peter Jackson wasn’t making this major blockbusters and employing half of New Zealand  he was actually making schlocky, over the top horror movies.  I mean I loved The Frighteners, like a lot, but it’s is amazing to see Peter Jackson’s earlier work, something a lot of people wouldn’t associate with his current body of work.  But for me, he will always be the guy who made a priest kick ass for the lord.  Today’s post is the ultra bloody affair, Dead Alive.

Movie of the Day – Troll 2 / Best Worst Movie

The documentary teaser trailer hinted at this movie and today I dive into one of the best worst movies ever made.  Troll 2 is the cult phenomenon that dominates the late night cinema crowd, the ones that crave for something ridiculous in their film watching.  It is, for a lack of a better term, horrible.  It is just down right terrible, but that terribleness translates into a magical cinematic experience that spawned the documentary Best Worst Movie, which looks at the making and following that the film created.  Best Worst Movie is a wonderful companion piece to today’s movie, Troll 2.

Let’s get this shit started!

Movie of the Day – For Love of the Game

I don’t know about you guys, but I really like it when Kevin Costner stars in sports movies.  It doesn’t matter if it is Golfing, Cycling or Baseball, he just has the right look and feel for being this Joe Sportsman.  Granted he has only been in like 5 sports movies total, each one of them are incredibly touching and memorable in particular way.  I don’t much care for the shoehorned love interest angle that they have to put into the movie, but something about watching him struggle in the game he loves to play just gets the best emotional reaction.  I have already covered American Flyers, Tin Cup and Field of Dreams, so today’s is another underrated baseball movie that also happens to be directed Sam Raimi.  YES that Sam Raimi who made Evil Dead.  Who would have thought he had a touching, sentimental look at a pitcher at an impasse of his career movie in him.

Movie of the Day – Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead

Some people will probably have more of an affinity for The Adventure’s In Babysitting, but I much prefer the 1991 classic, yes classic, Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead in terms of teens playing out this fantasy of having no supervision and getting into all sorts of shit that only 90s kids could do.  Yes, the entire premise of the movie was that the evil old would keel over and die so that the kids could be free to stay out late, the teenagers could fornicate, and whatever.  Honestly I just remember that the end of the movie was some sort of fashion show and then the mom showed up.  Also Christina Applegate was looking hella fine.

Movie of the Day – Dredd

Fuck Yes!  This is the sort of a grimy, pure action film that deserved to be seen by way more people than it got.  Dredd 3D, while it didn’t make my end of the year list, it certainly was one of the better action films of the year, right next to The Raid: Redemption.  In fact, those two movies are basically the same fucking thing, but one does more shooting and the other is more foot fist action.  All I know is, if you are an action fan, this is a must.

Movie of the Day – The Deadly Spawn

Ah yes, The Deadly Spawn, a movie that truly embraces it’s B movie qualities and low, low budget fair in order to craft an unforgettable horror flick.  I think the trailers over exaggeration of this being the movie that sci-fi fans were waiting for, might just be a bit of a reach.  I certainly enjoyed the general terribleness of this movie and I adore this even more since I got the coolest thing in the world that only enhances my enjoyment of the movie…which you can view after the jump.

Movie of the Day – Moonrise Kingdom

Against my better judgement, I decided that Moonrise Kingdom make to my end of the year list I did.  Don’t get me wrong, I loved Moonrise Kingdom a lot, but it is this weird love/hate relationship I have with the movie.  Wes Anderson has basically distilled his certain look and craft down to a fine science, knowing what makes his movies truly his and filled with the usual themes and subjects we associate with his movies.  It’s a veritable check list of items that he uses to make sure it is his movie, while offering us up some wonderful whimsy.

Movie of the Day – The Land Before Time

Oh god, before there were like 9 sequels, there was the original Land Before Time, a movie that basically crippled me emotionally as a child as I witnessed a baby long neck lose his mother in a horrific manner.  I realize that there is more to this movie than say the first like 20 minutes of the movie, but every time I tried to watch it as a kid, I just lost it.

Movie of the Day – BMX Bandits

Alright, seriously this will be the last bike movie that I do considering I am running out of bike specific movies and frankly, nothing can top this movie.  Yeah, BMX Bandits is pretty much the pinnacle of BMX movies, only because it stars Nicole Kidman in her first movie ever and he is sporting a wicked ginger fro hair thing.  Not sure, but that hair has a life of its own in this movie and she is just so wonderful.  Oh yeah, BMX Bandits is really just a total time capsule of 80s Day-Glo color wear and campy Australian sensibilities.
