Movie of the Day – The Sandlot (Anniversary Edition)

Guys!  You Guys!  You won’t believe it but The Sandlot turned 20 a few days ago.  I mean, shit I am old.  I just picked up the 20th Anniversary edition of this movie and I think I can safely say that is easily one of the best teen/kid/sports movie of all time.  This just takes me back when I caught this at the theater like 8 times during one faithful April in my youth.  I even talked about this movie in a previous Movie of the Day post, but I feel the need to take a trip down memory lane with a highlight reel of some of the best moments from this movie for it’s anniversary.  SANDLOT EVERYONE!  SANDLOT SANDLOT!

Movie of the Day – The Pagemaster

I need another bedtime story and after watching The Princess Bride (seriously still an amazing movie), I was reminded of this long forgotten gem when going through some perfect sick time movies.  Man, regardless of the critics review, I love this movie and the book that inspired the movie.  It was a movie about literature and the exploration of your imagination within the confines of books.  Sure it was a big advertisement to go to your local library, but hell it worked for me and the story telling was fantastic.

The Pagemaster goes between live action and hand-drawn animation, beautifully I might add, while breathing to life some of the most memorable moments in the pages of literature.  The Moby Dick scene was amazing, especially as a young kid, the fantasy elements were captivating and even going back as an adult, I am stunned by the voice work that was involved.  Christopher Lloyd, Frank Welker, Patrick Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg and more!

It’s what you would imagine how books could come to life and and while it feels a bit disjointed and suited for a more television special feel, the movie still holds your imagination in the best way possible.  Now the meds are kicking in, so I bid you all a good night!

Movie Review – Least Among Saints

Well, my first official review for LostinReviews.com has been posted and I am excited to be amongst some great local writers and critics.  Since I am the low man on the totem pole, I have to trudge through movies that most will pass on.  But in my love of movies and pursuit to consume as much as possible, I gladly take on the challenge.  So my first review, of hopefully many more to come, is posted and ready to be read.  Here is a small excerpt from the review and hit the link to head on over for the full review of Least Among Saints.

It takes the accidental death of a dog in order to reach a moment of clarity for a broken down war veteran in Least Among Saints.  It was at that moment that I checked out of the movie, a seemingly cheap plot device in order to spur along the closure that is needed for this movie to feel complete and whole.  The story of the film, which is directed, written, and stars Martin Papazian, is not a new concept.  The idea of a broken individual finding redemption through tragedy and the help he gives to a boy who shares a similar life experience.  The man/child relationship and bonding theme is done in other movies like I Am Sam, Big Daddy or The Boys Are Back, this attempt by Papazian is melodramatic and a bit too brooding for its own good.

Movie of the Day – Major Payne

In what dream world is there no more war and our fine killing machines like Major Payne are forced to become teachers?  I would love to know what dimension that world exists in.  That is basically the only gripe I have with this Bad News Bears like comedy in that the world is bullshit and war is non-existent.  Give me some realism.  Actually I am fucking around and this movie is probably one of the funnier Wayans family movies, that and Blank Man, that was brilliant.

Movie of the Day – Battlefield America

Class is in session bitches, prepare for crunkin 101 and I hope you have your juice boxes ready.

Are you fucking kidding me?  I thought the entire dance crew battle movie trend was all twerked out, but Hollywood you manage to fucking amaze me once again.  It’s You Got Served, but for kidz, with a z bitch.  You know those Kidz Bop albums that are more kid friendly songs of popular music, well this movie is like that.  I am fucking stoked that this came out and I can talk about how utterly hysterical movie is.  So if you love dancing and serving people or whatever, then get ready for kid sized dance crew battles in the playground world of Battlefield America.

Movie Review – Moonrise Kingdom

Wes Anderson has made the most Wes Andersony movie ever.  That is not a bad thing mind you, so don’t let that opening be misleading.  If you love Wes Anderson films, you will love his latest offering, Moonrise Kingdom.  If you are unfamiliar with Wes Anderson and his idiosyncratic filmmaking, here is a bullet list of the stuff you will see in his movies….all of them:

  • Kids acting like adults
  • Adults acting like kids
  • Strained family dynamics
  • Plaid
  • Esoteric musical choices
  • Scenes that are dead center framed
  • So much whimsy
  • Magical setting that seem created in a different world
  • Bold type font
  • More whimsy
  • Bill Murray being fucking awesome

This bullet list is pretty much the expectations you will have when you go into a Wes Anderson film, but all these elements used in someone else’s movie, doesn’t seem right.  All these things are uniquely refreshing and cohesive when given to Anderson, but it sometimes strays into the familiar territory that leads me to the impasse of Moonrise Kingdom.

Movie of the Day – The Bad News Bears (1976)

So this weekend in Kansas City, our town is hosting the All-Star game.  If I was a baseball fan, I would be excited about this, but instead I am just more “cool”  about it.  So the large influx of people to KC means things are going to be hectic here with a massive amount of stuff going to satiate the crowds who are here to either see the game or just came for the All-Star fest related programs other than baseball.  So today I wanted to post a movie that is baseball related and since I already did Major League, I chose another equally funny, profane movie.  And nothing is funnier than kids swearing and being utter dicks.

Movie of the Day – 3 Ninjas

I don’t know what is happening here, but I just can’t seem to get away from the martial arts fair of the early 90s.  With TMNT II and Surf Ninjas being covered recently, I just want to revert back to my childhood.  Who could forget the antics of young, white suburban kids learning the ancient art of nut kicking from Egg Shen of Big Trouble in Little China.  I am certain that this movie did more for the strip mall dojo’s in getting kids excited about becoming little crotch kicking ninjas.  I bought into this movie, the notion that us little kids could take on a ninja syndicate and save the girl with out nut kicking prowess and tiny fists of fury.  It’s a movie that would spawn countless knock-offs and sequels that sadly pale in comparison to the one true heir of young Bruce Lee wannabes.

Movie Review – Bully

I was a victim of bullying.  Shocking I know that a nerd like myself was the target for bullying with my glasses, portly disposition and general intelligence level above those that I attended school with.  It stings being bullied and teased in school for no other reason than to be the target of some ridicule so others can feel good about themselves.  I take comfort in the fact that my life has turned out immensely better than theirs, with a career (currently in between jobs) and not currently siring several children and working for slightly above minimum wage.  Take that fuckers!

Anyways, now that I have openly vented about my past, bullying is still some morbid national past time that happens even decades after I exited the education system.  We see it in the news about teens killing themselves from incessant bullying and the backlash of violence from those that just can’t take it anymore.  Everyone knows why but they can never seem to get to the heart of the issue.  Young kids deciding that the teasing and bullying becomes almost too much for them and end of taking their lives or those around them.  It’s a tragedy that has to be addressed and it hopefully a documentary like Bully will bring to light the issues of bullying in schools in the most direct way possible.
