Movie of the Day – The Thing

I try not to double post articles on my blog.  I mean I have done roughly 700 posts in about the 18 months I have been doing this so I try and give you all some new content every day.  I will say I have done a repost about  times now, one with Predator and then Heima, but that is due to time constraints and busy schedules.  But since I am doing a month long horror movie post, I can’t just sit back and not talk about this movie once again or at least post my original article.  This is the epitome of a horror movie for me and it’s one of the best movies out there.  That’s right, the movie that was bombed by critics and performed poorly at the box office, but it turned out to be John Carpenters best movies and a cult classic.

I realize that there was a “remake” prequel done this past year, which was alright for what it was.  I still think that nothing will touch this movie in terms of effects, atmosphere and acting.  It was the perfect storm of everything that could go right with a movie like this and I was absolutely terrified when I saw this as a kid.  I looked at everyone around suspiciously, even that kid who sat in the back of the class picking his nose and thought, “that is something an alien would do”.  I was afraid to pet a dog for a while, hoping that the dog wouldn’t split open and swallow me up to become one with The Thing.  It was also the movie that got my dad in trouble when shouted out Kurt Russel’s line of “Yeah FUCK YOU TOO”  and my mom thought he was saying that to her.  Yeah, I got some memories about this movie and how repulsed but enraptured I was by the creature effects and the whole tone of the movie.

The Thing is the scariest movie out there.  If you don’t recoil when you see the special effects of the monstrous abominations that come from the adapting organism, you might be jaded.  I just appreciate the complicated animitronics and the creativity in coming up with such horrifying creatures.  We don’t get movies like this much anymore.  Too much CGI and not enough practical effects.  So for today, I will link to my old post about this movie and I hope that you all enjoy your Friday.  Take Care!

So while the movie moves along with a tight pace and suspense that rivals any movie our there, the thing that makes this memorable for me is the creature effects.  We don’t know what the creature, alien, virus, whatever it is looks like.  Only we see manifestations of its presence through this grotesque  mutations of its victims.  Effects crew led by Rob Bottin and some help from effects guru Stan Winston are to thank and blame for the horrifying nightmares they created in my childhood.

Movie of the Day – They Live

I am hear to chew bubblegum and talk about this movie…and I’m all out of bubble gum.  Never has a line seemed more perfect to open up a chain of ass kicking that ensues.  They Live is a cult classic…period.  Anyone you ask about this movie will remember 2 scenes from this movie that is essentially the crux of my post today.  But amongst the two iconic scenes in this movie, or the ones that standout to everyone, this is a subversive film that manages to blend politics, consumer consumption, greed and the brainwashing of the masses.  Plus loads of shooting, fighting and weird looking aliens.

Movie of the Day – Escape from New York

Now that the holiday has passed us by and I can say goodbye to posting about holiday movies.  So to come back from the festivities, I decided to talk about on a dystopian future in which our favorite film city (New York) is the stomping grounds for lawlessness and utter debauchery.  Also the movie has Kurt Russel in an eye patch, Isaac Hayes as a Duke, Lee Van Cleef making an appearance and one of John Carpenter’s top films.  This science fiction movie is just the thing to inch us closer to a new year and certainly a lo-fi budgeted favorite.  Cult Classic.

Movie of the Day – The Thing

Again, I don’t know why I don’t fully admit that I like the horror movie genre.  I think I kid myself into believing that all horror movies are just about the gore and shock factor.  There isn’t tension, character development, or real clever devices to keep a person engaged.  Sure there are the few movies that reside in the genre that more than make up for it, House of the Devil, 28 Days Later, [rec] and zombie flicks reinvigorate the genre and makes me appreciate them more.  Then there is one thing that today’s horror movies have gotten away from is the use of conventional effects.  Sure it’s easy to design a monster or creature or even a gruesome death with the use of computer effects, but they just don’t have that, weight or impact that seeing an animatronic or makeup design team would have creating something with conventional means.  Not only that but this is a fucking terrifying movie as well from the mind of John Carpenter, with a little inspiration from the Howard Hawks 1951 film of the same name and guidance from John W. Campbell Jr. story “Who Goes There?”  If there is ever a true horror movie, The Thing is it.

Movie of the Day – Big Trouble in Little China

When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol’ Jack Burton always says at a time like that: “Have ya paid your dues, Jack?” “Yessir, the check is in the mail.”  – Jack Burton

Man I am excited to write this article for today’s post, mainly because I just received my Teefury shirt order that a little meta take on the film Big Trouble in Little China.  In the realm of film lists and rankings that different critics or writers have, Big Trouble is in my Top Ten of all time.  This is no joke as the movie has it all; action, horror, comedy, suspense, martial arts, Chinese mysticism, anti-hero, and grind house like film quality.  Hands down my favorite John Carpenter film, well ahead of The Thing and Escape from New York and one of my favorite Kurt Russel film.  The movie is this giant hodge podge of themes and action tropes that make re-watching this movie enjoyable every time.  While it out-righted bombed at the box office, this has found it’s home with the cult film fanatics.  Midnight showings, Mondo posters, meta t-shirts and overall acclaim for a movie that had unconventional film tropes and brought an entertaining film to life.
