Movie of the Day – A Woman, A Gun, and A Noodle Shop

Have you ever thought to yourself that while you were watching the sublime Coen Brothers film “Blood Simple” that there would be a different take on the film?  Maybe wondering what it would look like if say a famous international director decided to pay tribute to the movie with his/her vision of the story line?  Well folks your prayers are answered as Zhagng Yimou decided  that Blood Simple needed to be remade with some Asian period piece flair and today I will talk about the exciting and wonderful remake, A Woman, A Gun and A Noodle Shop.

Movie of the Day – Natural Selection

This is a movie I have been waiting awhile to talk about, mainly because it didn’t get a release in theaters other than the festival circuit.  It kind of sucks talking about a movie that a lot of people won’t be able to see unless they get the VOD treatment or some form of streaming.  Natural Selection was a movie I was back in November 2011 at a local film festival in Kansas City.  I have to admit, even rewatching it makes me realize how much I loved this movie and the subject matter presented.  A fantastic flick with a knockout performance from Rachel Harris, Natural Selection wowed me with a deep, character drama with some dark hints of humor.

So it was a relief to track this down on dvd and give it another watch.  With an amazing performance from the two leads, Harris being the standout of the pack.  The movie certainly is indie at heart, with a strong character driven script that propels the interesting story and filled with moments of earnest, heartfelt discussions about the issue at heart.

Movie of the Day – Bachelor Party

I will tell you what, I have said before about Tom Hanks and 80s movies, but they don’t make them like they used to anymore.  You got your Project X, Hangover, and that one movie 21 and Over which was exactly like the Hangover, but nothing will ever really compare to the debauchery of a young Tom Hanks just  fucking killing it in this comedy flick.  Bachelor Party is pretty much “the” party movie that others need to live up to.  Sure you got Animal House, but that is the movie which defines college life/college comedies/college parties.  Bachelor Party, that is a fucking great comedy movie with some of Hanks’ best work.

Tonight I have a friends bachelor party, so this is a short update but at least I am able to give you the movie of the day today.  If you have never seen it, I suggest you watch some classic Tom Hanks movies.  For me, while his later stuff is phenomenal, something about young Hanks just being a comedic genius and a versatile actor that go from comedy to drama, he can shift from those roles with ease and frankly, I just love this damn movie.  Check it out folks and have a good night!

Movie of the Day – The Rundown

It’s The Rock!  Holla!  Christopher Walken is also in this movie as well as the scene chewing villain of the movie, which is the primary reason I picked this movie for today.  The Rundown is actually one of my more enjoyable, not really a guilty pleasure, but a movie that is really just a popcorn flick and that is all.  It does manage to have a little of everything in it with some drama, lots of comedy, and pretty decent action sequences, that are a bit too cartoony in some instances.  But hey, it’s still a great movie to sit back and watch The Rock, Walken, William Scott and Dawson do their thing.

Movie of the Day – Point Break

So apparently by the amount of talk on twitter and facebook posts, Point Break is going to officially be remade for a modern audience.  Now I am always there to basically deride Hollywood of the fact that they don’t have any creativity anymore.  Believe me, I am no less thrilled about the latest remake than the next person and I await the day when they decide to remake a movie that is less than a year old.  Well I decided that I should commit to memory and this blog, a movie of the day post about one of my favorite action films out there.

Movie of the Day – The Sandlot (Anniversary Edition)

Guys!  You Guys!  You won’t believe it but The Sandlot turned 20 a few days ago.  I mean, shit I am old.  I just picked up the 20th Anniversary edition of this movie and I think I can safely say that is easily one of the best teen/kid/sports movie of all time.  This just takes me back when I caught this at the theater like 8 times during one faithful April in my youth.  I even talked about this movie in a previous Movie of the Day post, but I feel the need to take a trip down memory lane with a highlight reel of some of the best moments from this movie for it’s anniversary.  SANDLOT EVERYONE!  SANDLOT SANDLOT!

Movie of the Day – Army of Darkness (special edition)

Folks, tonight is a special night.  While I have talked about Army of Darkness before on a previous post, I felt it was worth the time to just post about this again, not at length though.  No folks, I am posting this because this evening at the Alamo Drafthouse Mainstreet in Kansas City, I will be hosting a special screening of Army of Darkness in 35mm.  But that isn’t all, tonight it will be a MONDO EVENT, meaning that the lucky 116 people in attendance tonight will be getting a very exclusive Mondo poster of Army of Darkness, one that will surely be one of the most impressive releases this year for Mondo.  I am so utterly excited to be helping with this event and I have seen the poster early.  I will tell you all that is a thing of beauty and the people in attendance tonight are going to go nuts.

So what a perfect way to celebrate the new Evil Dead movie being released than a Mondo Event on Army of Darkness.  I will update this once I am able to post about the poster in its entirety.

Hail to the King Baby!

Movie of the Day – The Advenutres of Milo and Otis

I hope you all are ready for some more animal cuteness cause it’s time for Milo and Otis.  Yes the movie with a pug nosed puppy and his curious cat friend.  I don’t have anything to say about the movie since in all honestly my brain will slowly devolve into mush as I watch the two lead frolic and play with one another as they are on the adventure of a lifetime.

Prepare for an overdose of cuteness!

Movie of the Day – Mystery, Alaska

Well, spring has come to Kansas City in the form of a winter storm that is more slush and annoying than anything else.  Sigh, Kansas weather is both interesting and frustrating at the same time.  Oh well, the snowfall means that it’s time to warm up and watch some hockey….well a hockey movie anyways since I don’t have cable.  Today is a little seen movie with a stellar cast I think and a good story about a small town hockey team taking on the big leagues with their pride on the line.
