Movie of the Day – Mystery, Alaska

Well, spring has come to Kansas City in the form of a winter storm that is more slush and annoying than anything else.  Sigh, Kansas weather is both interesting and frustrating at the same time.  Oh well, the snowfall means that it’s time to warm up and watch some hockey….well a hockey movie anyways since I don’t have cable.  Today is a little seen movie with a stellar cast I think and a good story about a small town hockey team taking on the big leagues with their pride on the line.

Movie of the Day – Goon

So a while back I did a post on the movie “Slap Shot“, which is a vulgar and crude hockey movie that is both enjoyable and hilarious if you are in the mood for a sports comedy.  So when I posted this, I got asked about the movie Goon, which the trailer is at the top of the page.  I surprisingly had a copy of the movie on my desk, but never willed myself to watch it.  It should be noted that the film isn’t available until May 9th, but is available On-demand and VOD.  From the initial trailer, it was a tone deaf, slugfest of a film that offered up the bare essentials of machismo and guttural fisticuffs that satiated a bloodlust that we all have.  I didn’t truly discern a lot of comedy from the trailer and what the true essence of what the movie could be.  It seemed like just a poorly remade version of Slap Shot, just with a new veneer and some more updated jokes.  But after watching it, I changed my tune about this film as beneath the scabbed over cuts and black eyes the film leaves us with, there is a lot of sincerity, heart and vulgarity to make me a fan of Goon.

Movie of the Day – Slap Shot

They sure don’t make movies like this anymore.  Actually they do, but they end of being a sad replica of an era when vulgarity and raucous humor found a perfect marriage instead of relying on the crudest of humor to force comedic moments.  Sports comedies are an interesting genre, mainly because we usually view sports as some sort of hallowed institution of professionalism as athletes want to conduct themselves in a respectable manner.  While there are more respectable sports films that cherish the elegance of the game, Slap Shot body checks the shit out those movie and combines the sweet vulgarity of comedy with one of the more entertaining sports films out there.  Also Paul Newman is in this movie and that means I will watch it.

Movie of the Day – D2: The Mighty Ducks

SUCK IT all you international pee-wee hockey teams out there.  USA USA USA USA USA USA!  When ducks fly together, they can’t be stopped.  Except they make easier targets for Duck Hunt enthusiasts and trained hunters.  Listen, I don’t have much to say on this movie cause it is one of the most bombastic, chest thumping kid film sequels to ever hit the screens.  I remember seeing this movie when I was a kid and thinking that you could actually do the knuckle puck shot that Kenan Thompson does only to realize that the physics and trajectory of said shot doesn’t really match what the movie shows.  But I will say this, D2 is probably one of the best sequels to a kids movie ever, so move over the Bad New Bears go to Japan.

Movie of the Day – The Mighty Ducks

Quack Quack Quack Quack Quack!  EMILIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!  Alright in all seriousness, The Mighty Ducks is awesome.  Damn you Disney and your feel good sports movies about a rag tag group of rejects being coached by former child hockey star that is only there because he is ordered to by a court.  There is no denying the greatness of this concept and how familiar it is to the movie watcher, but it’s about a Pee Wee Hockey team, which is serious business.  So form up in the Flying V and get ready for Slapshot, the kid version.
