Movie of the Day – Paul

Being a nerd and loving science fiction is pretty much the same as liking PB&J sandwiches.  The two items are mutually exclusive, even if some nerds have a much bigger affinity for the genre than others.  So when science fiction movies comes along, I get a bit giddy as I love the genre and love being transported in a world unlike any other.  What I like more about sci-fi, is when I see little nerdy references to other sci-fi films in a particular movie or television show.  It somehow gives me the validation of knowing and recognizing the callbacks or jokes from the countless hours of movie and television show watching.  It sounds nerdy, but I have already admitted to that. So you can imagine how I felt when I first laid eyes upon the trailer for Paul.  A trailer for a film that seemingly was made for me and those like me, I got excited for this movie immediately and with the same fervor that I had when I first watched Blade Runner, which is the only time you will ever hear that sort of comparison.

Movie of the Day – Fanboys

Alright so this is movie panders to my nerd side and it succeeds.  Sure this movie was that great, but as a nerd who loves nerdy jokes, this is really for me.  I can’t fault my own love of the culture to dismiss a movie, more so I must embrace it and learn to appreciate that these sort of a movies are cherish-able.  So this is a road trip movie for nerds, one that has a lot more sight gags and geek centric jokes, which I love.  So taking it easy today with the post, I decided to just feed my sensibilities and pick a movie that doesn’t require to think about, but mainly just sit back and enjoy an entertaining comedy about some nerds want to see the first cut of the Star Wars Phantom Menace.

Movie of the Day – Scott Pilgrim vs The World

I am going to reveal something that might shock some of you.  I just want to brace you all for this sudden realization.  I am a geek.  In fact, I am a geek about comics, games (board and video) and movies.  I can’t help it, I have this compulsion to seek out the geekiest things and embrace everything about it.  Thanks dad for the X-Men comics and lifetime of remembering useless things like who made up the original members of Alpha Flight and the entire back story of the Phoenix Saga.  The Nintendo game system is another push into the realm of geekdom.  Countless hours spent playing and then when I found out about role playing video games, I was lost to the mist and wonder of geek life.  So let’s jump years into my life past the awkward teen phase and past my awkward college phase all the way to September 4th 2010 and the day that all my geek loves combined together for an unforgettable movie experience that is, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

It was the culmination of all my love of things geeky.  You got a kick ass adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s pop culture, game and geek fueled book series, Scott Pilgrim.  If you have never read the series, please take a look, especially if you are a gamer or lover of all things geeky.  Then taking this book series and making it into a movie, I just about died.  Finding out that the movie was going to be directed by Edgar Wright, the man who brought us Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, I experienced pure bliss.  So a book about video games, music, and pop culture was going to be turned into a movie, something that I love, this was going to be pure win.

Movie of the Day – Role Models

I am deciding to take it easy today with the latest post.  After the long winded post about The Tree of Life, I needed a little something vulgar and funny as hell.  Role Models is a movie that kind of came out of nowhere in the midst of a lot of comedies.  What I took as just another movie that was riding the Superbad, Knocked Up, R-rated comedy train, is actually a very heartfelt comedy that isn’t afraid to be crude and use juvenile humor.
