Movie of the Day – The Goonies

My love of The Goonies is probably greater than that of a parent and their newborn child.  I don’t think that I could ever like something more than this movie.  I wouldn’t say it defined my life, but The Goonies is the movie that got me into cinema.  It’s the reason I love watching and writing all things cinema.  I can quote this movie with the best of them.  I own this movie on multiple formats.  I can do the Truffle Shuffle, which is also a sad statement on the state of childhood obesity.  Ke Huy Quan will never be referenced by me as Short Round, but as Data.  I will be a Goonie for life.

Movie Review – Miami Connection

Get ready for the reunion tour of a lifetime.  Getting the band back together, the ass kicking, taekwondo orphans, mega rock band Dragon Sound, is being resurrected for a brand new audience for some of the best 80s music around.  Synth playing, mullet rocking, guitar shredding, pop infectious lyrics will get you jumping out of your seats, right before you are jump kicked back from the stage as Dragon Sound not only rocks the stage, but also rocks the criminal underworld and their “bad” cocaine in the film Miami Connection.

Movie of the Day – Tango & Cash

High Five BRO!  Tango & Cash, a wonderful little relic from an era when Stallone and Russel were just churning out action movies like there was no tomorrow.  Another entry in the buddy cop genre with a fast playing detective paired with a straight laced, by the books cop.  It’s the wacky pairing that leads them to antics and trying survive shootouts and gang fighting.  It’s campy, it’s ridiculous (mainly cause Stallone is the straight laced cop here) but damn if it isn’t a seriously entertaining action movie from 1989.

Movie of the Day – The Money Pit

So I just got done helping my friends Julia and Michelle move into their new place, in the heat, which was about 105 degrees today.  I don’t mind moving or helping to move friends cause that’s what friends do, but I am tired and exhausted and doing today’s post requires a bit of effort on my part.  But that won’t stop me from posting today, no sir it won’t.  I decided to keep with a theme for today as I did for yesterday which was about baseball.  I could have chosen the 1988 Richard Pryor movie called Moving, which would seem appropriate, but it isn’t a good movie and I only post about movies I like.  So I classic, funny, 80s and Hanksy. That’s right, today is all about Tom Hanks in The Money Pit.  Just for the record, my friends didn’t buy a house so they won’t encounter these sort of problems, but it’s a movie about moving and the joys of living in a new place.

Movie of the Day – Cobra

I fucking love this movie.  One of Stallone’s finer films from the 80s, Cobra is the encapsulation of what 80s action, no filler, all killer films were all about.  Who goes to see Stallone act?  I sure as shit don’t as I am more interested in what watching him shoot a lot of people, all bad guys mind you.  Cobra is just as cheesy as it can get with the one liners, empty dialogue and a whole metric ton of killing.  If you are a red blooded American male, get your cockles ready for Cobra action while you down a King Cobra Malt Liquor bottle and feed your pet Cobra some leftovers.  COBRA!

Movie of the Day – Beverly Hills Cop

Oh Eddie Murphy…what happened?  I mean, honestly, what happened?  I realize that the family friendly movie genre is keeping you well off financially, but man, your films used to be amazing.  You were the edgy comedian that was charismatic on screen, able to chuckle and kick ass in some dynamite films.  I try and remember those halcyon days of the 80s where you were the man and I looked forwarded to your “R” rated films cause my parents didn’t really care what we watched.  Thanks mom and dad!  Today, I try and remember the good old days, so today is a day for Beverly Hills Cop.

Movie of the Day – Clue

It was always Col. Mustard in the Library with the wrench.  At least that is what I thought happened in the game of Clue, the murder mystery board game that had people becoming young, Angela Lansbury type detective to solve a murder in some rich persons mansion.  Clue ended up being the first board game turned movie to hit the theaters in 1985 and since I just finished watching Battleship the other day, I figured I would keep with a theme.  So with a comedic cast of characters (Tim Curry bitches!) and the campy nature of a murder mystery comedy in tow, Clue actually is one of the more unique board game adaptations that actually did something interesting with the ending of the film.

Movie of the Day – The Last Starfighter

What kid hasn’t dreamed that one day, all those countless hours of playing video games would suddenly become the one thing that could save humanity?  Come on, you can hear the collective outcry of mothers across the nation telling their sons or daughters that playing video games is a waste of time and it could be spent outside, doing things that normal kids do.  I certainly heard, but then again the outside was scary and video games were a safe alternative lifestyle for my reclusive nature.  But one day, I wish I could prove the world that my great skills at playing Q-bert would come in handy if I needed to defeat some aliens on a block pyramid of some kind.  But alas, that won’t happen, but the movie The Last Starfighter definitely put the fuel on the fire of our dreams that our quarter dropping, arcade playing skills would be needed to defend the universe.  The 80s fucking ruled!

Movie of the Day – Real Genius

This is one of those movies that escaped my memory until a few nights ago when it was late at night AMC was playing some movies from the 80s.  I couldn’t mistake the sound from the television as one of my favorite “It’s That Guy” actors William Atherton.  So much to my enjoyment, the movie that was playing was Real Genius, comedy film that was a unique gem of the 80s and remembered fondly for its quirkiness and 80s humor.  I don’t typically pick a lot of movies to write about from the 80s, not comedies anyways.  No sadly for me I remember more of the action films that set the standards for violence and those wonderful synth-pop infused music soundtracks.  Others might view that era more for the coming of age films and teen comedies that started to capture the youth market, but ultimately it’s all subjective.  I do admit, that I rather enjoy the offbeat comedies that the 80s produced and Real Genius is one of those comedies.
