50/50: Ridley Scott

So with my excitement for Prometheus reaching a fever pitch as the ominous date June 8th inches closer and closer, I decided to do a new article series for directors, with me ranking their 5 best and 5 worst movies.  All my opinion mind you, but I like the idea of analyzing the best of what he has done to the worse of what he has put out.  Now I realize that this is subjective and to that I say, “My Blog, My Rules”.  So if you feel slighted that White Squall didn’t make the cut, spoiler…it didn’t, then feel free to voice your criticism.  It was hard enough to pick just 5 winners and 5 losers, but I think I did a good enough job picking a variety of films that span the entirety of his career.  So below is a mixed list of winners and loser, more so the compliment sandwich of presenting a winner and then a loser and then another winner.  It lessens the disappointment.

Summer Movie Spectacular: June Edition

As May is starting wind up and the heavy hitter films of Battleship, Men in Black 3 and some other non-eessential viewing opening blockbusters, what you should get excited for is the upcoming month of June and the assortment of films that hit about every demographic possible.  We are looking at films aimed at tweens, goth kids, ninja fans, apocalyptic genre fans, even fans of male stripping.  As usual, there is a whole slew of films that I wish I could see but will have to keep the list of films to those that I definitely will make an effort to see and those that I will steer clear of because I don’t hate myself.  I will say that I will gladly see the films I don’t want to shell out money for if I can get some press passes so I can rip on them for the hell of it.  It’s a tough hobby/job but I do it for you, my readers.  So start saving your allowance and  break open the piggy bank, June is going to be a hell of a month.

Also I do realize that there are a lot of other films that are out on VOD or limited release, so I tried to catch the June releases that were interesting and major, along with ones that are just horrific.

Name That Tune: Massive Attack – Angel

I decided to start up a new series of article, mainly because I have found myself with an abundance of time as of late, but also because I actually enjoy film soundtracks a lot.  I thought that this would be a fun new thing to do and try.  My encyclopedic knowledge of films also extends to the musical styling that are present in films, more importantly to the over usage of certain songs in movies.  In this case, the showcase for today is the 1998 Album Mezzanine from Massive Attack, which apparently has three songs on the album that are in constant use for television programs and movie trailers or soundtracks.  The song “Angel” alone shows up in over a dozen movies and I am not counting the dozen or so television shows that also use this song.  So below is a nice little cobbling of clips where the song appears in and frankly, I want you to tell me if it fits within the context of the clip.

Here is the original song in its entirety:

It’s a beautifully haunting song, but as you will see below, used in a lot of movies.

True/False Fest – Highlights

*Update* Pictures are down for some reason, but I will get them working again soon.

I am sure that everyone is tired of my updates, to which I will say, “you don’t have to read them”.  But like any good….decent…alright mediocre blogger, I have to give an overall impression of my time at the festival along with the highlights, never focusing on the negatives. So this will be a compilation of my favorite documentaries at the festival, what I enjoy in terms of screenings and lastly, photos and videos.  While not professional photos or videos in any way, still a little piece of True/False Fest to take home.  So away we go.

Also here are the links to the recaps of each day of the festival if you have read them

True/False Fest Day Four

Well folks, it has come time for me to close out my first ever True/False Film Fest.  It has been an amazing time, but I will do an overview to the whole festival with pictures and videos and a bunch of praise.  For now I want to keep this recap strictly to the films and experiences I had during the festival and get you excited for upcoming, full length reviews.

Like every morning, I get up, change and head out to grab some grub courtesy of Lakota and their Chai and pastries.  One the agenda for the final day of the festival were 4 films and a closing party to end the fest.  What I didn’t realize once I started the day as to how sad I was that this was all ending and the fact that my first film was a powerful and touching documentary on the struggles of AID’s activists in the mid 80s and early 90s.  As a straight male, I don’t have a frame of reference to connect with them on a lifestyle level, but the film pulled you in at an emotional level that leaves you with a hopeful outlook.

True/False Fest Day Three

Another fun filled day of activities, food for days and finally a full list of films to see today.  On the list are five films, each one covering s different aspect or culture and the final culmination of my evening will be with the documentary from Morgan Spurlock on Comic-Con.  As a prolific nerd and purveyor of geek culture, this will be the crowning achievement of the evening and festival.

I had a much start to the day and with a hearty breakfast from Main Squeeze (fantastic local/organic restuarant) and then a chai from Lakota, I realized that I actually had back to back to back to back films today, which started with a film that framed, gorgeously I might add, the heated debate over a community center that just happens to be located just 2 blocks from where the World Trade Center used to stand.

True/False Fest Day Two

After a rousing first day of the festival and a little bit of sleep, I awoke to find my calendar beeping with this mornings host of items to take part in. While the first day was filled with only two films, I had 4 in total to see today, all of which covered a wide variety of issues, with two of them being secret screenings. I will get into what that means once I get to the repsective films.

Overall the day started out fantastic with a lunch/brunch at Main Squeeze for local/organic meals and I headed to the Globe Theater for the first of 4 films that I managed to reserve tickets to. Along the way, the festival had set up some amazing day of activities, mainly the march through downtown I expressed my affection on twitter to the woman who was dressed up as the female Shephard from the Mass Effect video game series. If only I wasn’t going to the latest film would I have ran out and got a picture. Oh well. Some good food was had and enjoyable conversation from a few of the patrons at each film, helped cap an otherwise stellar day 2. But enough about that, lets get on to the micro-reviews which will be a bit difficult to talk about once you read more after the jump.

True/False Fest Day One

So I finally made it into Columbia, MO which I will call home for about four days while I attend their 9th annual True/False Film Fest.  For me this is a welcome vacation from work and necessary since I have an abundance of time off built up at work and what better way to indulge in my hobby than attend a film festival.  In my preivous post about what to expect film wise from the festival, I have been able to, in the span of a day, see what makes this festival so unique and vibrant.  Everything about the city (downtown to be precise) seems to come alive from the atmosphere of other film lovers.  Street performers belting out ballads and percussive sounds, to the oppulently dressed volunteers who have made the festival experience enjoyable for me during my first night here.  While I am excited and elated to see what the next several days have in store for me, I am more interested in what the organizers have in store for me when it comes to their fine selection of documentary and non-fiction films.

For my first night as a Lux Passholder (yeah badass I know), I was able to get two films scheduled for the first evening. The first film of my night, not the first of the festival mind you, was being held at The Blue Note, a venue that seems to be no stranger to being at capacity as the documentary that night drew out a heavy crowd which filled the balcony seating and floor seating as well. The documentary that evening is a compelling film that follows the artistic expression and suppression in Mainland China. A nation that seems to be going through the pangs of economic and social expansion, but finds a means to supress expression through limiting and imprisoning the artistic freedoms of the “intellectuals”.

True/False Fest Preview

Well, I finally did it.  I managed to post for a month long about nothing but documentaries.  I enjoyed this little exercise in focusing on one genre of fillmmaking for a month and it was all for my lead up to the True/False Film Fest in Columbia, MO.  The fest takes place on March 1st through March 4th and the focus is on the art of documentary films.  While there are a few that toe the line to non-fiction genre, the aim of the fest is to open a dialogue channel between audiences and filmmakers.  I have been excited about this fest as it will be my first, heavy film festival to take part in.

So with my pass purchased, the hotel booked and my time off from work put in, I am poised to experience around 17 films within the span of 4 days.  It might seem daunting and not much of a vacation for most people, but I am going for the experience and enjoyment of film.  Also this will give me a ton of content to write about and also gain experience on festival writing.  So if any potential film sites want to send me to, oh, Sundance or anything, please let me know.  Just throwing that out there.

My aim is to do micro-updates, highlighting short blurbs on the films and experience each day and then taking a bit of time later in the month to fully review each film.  If you aren’t following me on twitter, do so to get tweets from me while I am there and my attempt to get a photo with Morgan Spurlock and other filmmakers there.  Follow me at @PlotDevices on twitter!

So to get you pumped or somewhat interested in my little venture, I am posting some trailers and synopsis about some of the films that I am seeing at the True/False Fest.  Just a taste before you dive into what I have to say.  Enjoy!

The 84th Annual Academy Awards

Well, the Oscars are this Sunday and I haven’t put together my Oscar Ballot.  Mainly I am a wait to the last minute sort of guy, but also I wanted to try and catch a couple more Oscar films before making an informed decision.  So while I nailed the Golden Globes, I am hoping that magic will carry over to the Oscars and net me zero dollars since I am not: betting in a pool of some kind.  But that shouldn’t stop any of you from using my predictions as I like to think that I am good at knowing what Oscar bait films will win the crowd over.  Also I watch way too many movies, so there is that going for me.  So I will start from the bottom, meaning the technical awards and then move on up to the big dogs of the evening.  Enjoy and good luck.  One more thing, there are a lot of categories, so I broke the post out into a few pages, so please click through for additional content.
