Movie of the Day – Broken Flowers

Bill Murray is the man.  There is no debate about this as it is a fact.  Sure the man has made a couple of movies that were horrible, Osmosis Jones anyone?  When you take a look at the mans filmography, there is no denying that he is an artist and one of the best.  Who doesn’t get excited when a movie you are excited has Bill Murray as part of the cast?  What I like most about his films are the ones where he plays a more subtle and subdued character.  He doesn’t need to be loud, comedic or even the center of attention, rather the films where is not the Bill Murray we associate with in past film are some of his best roles.  So Broken Flowers, a film by auteur Jim Jarmusch, is the perfect compliment of subtle directing with skillful acting.

Trailer Time! – Ladies Night Edition

Movie of the Day – Cloverfield

Gosh, I remember the whole big lead up to this films release.  The viral marketing, the cryptic trailers and all the speculation as to what this film was about.  It was a monster movie, but the real intrigue was what the monster looked like and what caused it to appear in the monster magnet city of New York.  I love a good monster film, basically growing up with Godzilla films, this movie intrigued me enough to get invested in the viral marketing and back story even before the movie came out.  Destruction, chaos, shaky cam, and monsters, bound to be a good time.

Movie of the Day – Wedding Crashers

In just a few short hours, my dearest friends and avid readers of my blog, Heather and Luke Physioc are getting married.  Well they were already wed, but now that the two are finally in the same town for good, what better way to celebrate with a big ass wedding party.  So while I am not crashing any party, I am phoning this post in today so I can cobble together my outfit and prep for a kick ass time.  So I got my 8-bit tie, suit and plus one in order for tonight, so that only leaves the blessed wedding and free food to enjoy.  Heather and Luke…CONGRATS!

Also Wedding Crashers is a ridiculously funny movie and really the only other wedding movie that I like, next to the Wedding Singer.  Also what the hell Adam Sandler?  You used to be great.

Movie of the Day – Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

As you all well know, I am a fan of heist movies.  You should know if you have been following my blog since the humblest of beginnings, but if not that’s cool, I can fill you in on the details.  There is something so sly and cool about heist movies.  I love watching the inner workings of a crime caper unfold and see the gears start to turn as the act is being committed.  From the assembling of the crew, the explanation of the act and then watching everything fall into place.  Ocean’s Eleven (the most recent one) had all the hallmarks of what makes a good heist film for me.  While capturing all the parts of the act, they managed to interject a stylistic rhythm to the whole proceeding that made the film have this unique vibe that leads you to believe that Clooney and Pitt really do steal from people on the weekends.

Movie of the Day – Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

From time to time I like going back to re-read past reviews and movies that I have seen.  I like to review my first impressions about films, seeing if the effect and awe of the film might have diminished or changed over time or through repeat viewings.  One film that seems to divide a lot of people was TInker Tailor Soldier Spy.  This is the sort of film that is for the die hards of the novel and subsequent BBC series, one that dives into the world of espionage and dapper peacoats that come in many shades of grey (or gray for those that are sticklers).  For those that haven’t read the book or seen the series (both of which are recommended), the film itself might be a bit too indepth and daunting.  For me, this is a perfect film that marries intrigue and one of the best ensemble cast of actors.

Movie of the Day – The Fall

I have a love hate relationship with director Tarsem Singh. On one hand, he just doesn’t really develop a story like he should, With strong actors, epic plots and the fact that he has been directing for several years, he should kind of know how to devlop that crucial story that would help make his films better. On the other hand, his visuals and eye for cinematography are the things that dreams are made of. Gorgeous, beauitful, and some of the most captivating films put to screen, Tarsem films deliver on the magic that is cinema with astounding visual skills. While not his first film, The Fall is truly one of the films that is a must see, simply because it exists.

Movie of the Day – The Replacement Killers

I will watch any movie that has Chow Yun-fat on screen. Shit, I sat through the crappy second Pirates of the Caribbean movie just because he was playing some typecast role of a Chinese naval pirate. Also his ship looked like a dragon, which was bad ass in my opinion. But for me Chow Yun will always be the premier action star. Sure that is a tall opinion that I am putting out there, but if you are an action fan, you will remember that this man, along with John Woo, pretty much defined the bullet ballets of late 80s and early 90s. From acrobatic gun battles and making the act of weilding duel guns a staple of action cinema, Chow Yun is the man and you won’t find any actions films that are better than what we did for Hong Kong cinema. While his roles in Hong Kong cinema are well documented, he did take his first turn in an American film directed by a new, young director Antoine Fuqua, one that is underappreciated in my opinon. That film is The Replacement Killers.

Movie of the Day – Knuckle

So ignore the fact that the trailer looks like the latest UFC fight promotion on Spike TV, for Knuckle is more than just a highlight reel of backyard brawls and sweaty guys lumbering haymakers to one another.  Sure there is a lot of barrel chested fighting going on in the trailer, but what you realize is that we are getting an intimate look into a society that we have only heard about in passing film or new stories.  We know about gypsies and the travel pack of families that roam the countryside, but they are their own world and society, one which we have no first hand knowledge about.  This is what makes Knuckle interesting, the base animal civility of solving disputes between families with good old fisticuffs.

Summer Movie Spectacular: May Edition

Let’s be honest, summer movie season starts earlier every year much like Christmas shit is put up in stores in September.  Now I think it is because there is some sort of secret society that is forcing Christmas, X-Mas, Holiday whatever to start earlier and earlier as a consumer plot to rid of us our money.  Whatever, but Hollywood is taking a page out of their books  and starting to release big budget flicks in May to start the foaming of the rabid fanboy mouth early.  So I am here to give you the rundown what will be the good stuff you should come May, June, July and August.  And by good stuff, I mean the shit I think is worth seeing, also some picks that you should avoid.

This first go around, is the May flicks.  So prep your wallet for some movie watching.
