New Year’s Resolutions

Well, better late than never.  This won’t be about my pledge to lose weight, be a better person or other things that I should do on a daily basis.  Actually the lose weight one is already in play, but has been since like forever, so it is a bit unfair to use that as a resolution since you should always be healthy.  I digress, like I usually do, so lets talk about the resolutions that matter.  I want to make a resolution to this blog and my fellow readers, which number around 106 at last count and all the other lurkers who don’t follow or comment.

I started this blog with the best intentions, which were to get me to start writing about something I love.  Movies were an obvious choice for me since it is one of my unabashed passions.  I never really thought about making movies before as my technical eye isn’t the best and I enjoyed the spectacle more than the technical prowess.  I tried my hand at writing some short films, but that never came to fruition, more or less due to some complications and the fact that I am not a great writer, which is even more evident through my use of improper grammar and two years of college English classes.

While I never imagined that the blog would be something more to me, I found myself loving the fact of coming home at night and writing about a movie that I love.  It was even cooler when people who read my blog, started commenting and even opening discussions about my selection, as if touching upon some unspoken bond.  I enjoy going to the movies when I can and writing full fledged reviews to get out to the masses.  I like seeing people being excited about a particular film and the general praise of a good review.  I like all of this and want to be better at it.  I do this because I love to write about something I am passionate about and then there is the other reason I do this, you the reader.  You have taken the time out of your day to read, like, comment or share the posts I write about and I appreciate it.  It’s wonderful to see others appreciate my work and this leads me into my resolutions:

1.  Expand my reach.

Now I am not the best person at commenting on other film blogs or even with those that comment on my site regularly.  I hate that I don’t do this as sometimes I come and put out that one blog post and call it a day.  I sometimes forget that there are people who come on and comment on my posts, but I don’t seem to return the favor often enough.  I vow, today, tomorrow, the next day and everyday; to go out and comment and express my adoration of all those that put their thoughts in words and post them for all to see.  I want to expand my reach to those who do this everyday like me and show them that there are people who love their work and appreciate their posts.  So for my fellow followers, expect more snark in your comment section on the posts that I read.  I might not be the most proactive blogger with other fellow writers, but damn it I am going to be better now.

2.  More film reviews

There is a difference between my Movie of the Day posts and the Film Review I do.  Typically if I see a movie in theaters, which is a recent release, I will take the time to write out a thoughtful review of the film and all the moving parts that make up the whole.  The Movie of the Day post is just more of me picking out the best parts of a movie that I love and more comical musings.  One of the things that holds me back is time and motivation to go out to see movies.  I used to like to go see a movie with friends or a significant other.  It was a way for me to decompress after a movie and not seem creepy at the movie theater when going by oneself.  Now that I don’t have a significant other and some friends aren’t as gung ho about seeing movies, I have learned to embrace seeing movies by myself.  I find it a bit more enjoyable and relaxing to go see movies without having to compromise on what I want to see.  I mean if I have to make concessions in movie watching with friends, I end up seeing movies like Transformers 3, rather than say Hanna.  I do like the mindless entertainment, but I do enjoy to be challenged, which means I have to go solo to some films.  So expect a bit more recent reviews of films rather than mining the depths of my collection and Netflix queue.

This is about two-thirds of the films that I own….ABOUT TWO-THIRDS

3.  More Articles!

While I enjoy the daily blog post on a movie I love, I found myself getting excited at the prospect of Top 10 lists or even the outside the box post like the best movie references in Community.  It was fun to think about something other than a particular movie and I want to keep that up.  I want to write more about posters, trailers, top ten lists or even soundtracks.  I want to do this because it is fun and I will enjoy writing about something different.  I used to do the Trailers of the Week and that sadly kind of went away.  But sure enough I am going to bring that shit back and even implement more articles into my repertoire of content.  I already have ideas like Movie Posters, Soundtrack highlights, the art of the film opening, or even more trailers than you can shake a stick at.  It will take some time to get this out, but you can expect more in the coming year.

4.  Continue writing

There have been times that I found myself not wanting to write.  It is daunting at times to come up with a movie to write about, every single day of the week.  I haven’t even been doing this for a year and at times I find myself staring at my movie collection, thinking about what would make a good post this particular day.  At times I just want to say “Fuck It” and post at my leisure, but no, I am going to stay committed to what I set out to do.  I don’t get paid for this, at all, but I do this because I love film and I love to put my thoughts into words for all to enjoy.  It gives me something do when I get home other than watch tv and play video games.  It gets me to write and it gets me out of the house to film festivals and seeing recent releases so I have something to write about the next day.  Will I become the most revered film critic, writer out there?  Fuck no, there are people out there that are way better at this than I am, but I want to do this for myself and those that take the time out of their day to read and follow me.

I appreciate all my readers and commentors, even if I am not the most reciprocating of bloggers.  I did these resolutions to better myself as a writer and blogger, but also a person (if that makes sense).  I am not even a year into blogging on this site, but already I have over 360 posts and I want to continue doing that.  I want this to be something that I can look back on and feel a sense of accomplishment.

So, expect more from me in the future and thanks for reading.

    PTFO

    Post the fuck on.

I read your blog because your taste and interpretations about movies are very close and similar to mine. So you screening movies before I bother has been helpful.

    And keep writing.

Go back and read your first post and then compare it with your newest one. There is some good growth.

    Carry on.
