Your Generic Summer Movie List Part 2

Well as the month of June is coming to a close soon, we are nearing the halfway mark of our summer movie season.  So far, there have been some top notch movies to come out (Super 8, X-Men First Class, and The Tree of Life) which I have been able to see.  Now we are heading into the bottle neck of July which sees three huge movie release with the final Harry Potter movie, Captain America representing America and the movie I am least interested in seeing, but will do so because I am masochist is Transformers 3.  There are a lot of smaller release movies that look amazing as well to offset explosions and slow motion action sequences.  So let us get started with the July movie releases that I am looking forward to.

July is an interesting release month as each week has one major studio release.  The week of July 1st has Transformers 3 coming out and the week of July 8th has, I guess the major release of The Zookeeper Horrible Bosses, none of which I have any interest in seeing.  It isn’t until the week of July 15th where we get my eagerly awaited franchise movie.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2

Wow, that trailer is fucking kick ass.  The Potter franchise is one of my favorite film series in existence.  There is something unique about a series that progresses with the audience in terms of subject matter.  From the first movie, you get this whimsical, magical setting with warm colors and a child-like sense of adventure.  We started a journey with the cast of the first movie and as they grew up in the Potter world, so did the tone of the movie.  Each movie has gotten darker in subject matter and will culminate with a climatic battle that strips away the innocence of the movies.  You have to appreciate that the movies and books have grown with the fanbase.  The kids that started reading the books a decade ago are now growing up as teens or adults, thus the tone reflects that dynamic change.

Hands down the final movie looks to have every possible theme and battle sequence a movie could possibly have.  I am excited for this conclusion and more than likely, will be there on opening.  No cape or wand though, that would be fucking dorky.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Opening the following week after Harry Potter, another comic book movie to take my money and to tell you the truth, it deserves my money.  While not getting the biggest marketing push currently, this looks to be miles ahead of Thor and Green Lantern in terms of performance and quality.  The origin story of America’s hero is more hoo-rah military than anything else, but given that the comic book was created during a time of turmoil, the character is a symbol for the American spirit.  Chris Evans is about as all-American as you can get in terms of casting and he does look the part of Steve Rogers.  The movie has an amazing cast and the action looks phenomenal.  Every trailer that has been released has gotten me pumped for the movie and I can’t wait to check out Captain America battle the Red Skull

Another Earth

I have covered this movie in my first Trailers of the Week post here.  So I won’t cover a lot more about it other than the trailer has me wanting to see this movie more and more.  The beautiful music and serene juxtaposition of the parallel Earth just out of reach is incredible.  I love the concept about wanting to know if the other you on the other Earth is like you.  Maybe that person has made better decisions in their life.  Maybe they found a love that you let go long ago.  This is more of a limited release movie, so check you local art theaters.

Cowboys and Aliens

Ok, the title is main reason I am going to see this movie, that and Olivia Wilde is in it.  Aside from that, I do enjoy a good genre mashing with my movies.  Given that Jon Favreau is directing the movie, he seems like a good choice given his track record with the Iron Man movies and the underrated Zathura.  A western sci-fi makes me long for the days when Firefly was back on the air.

Attack The Block

An alien invasion movie on a small scale, this is a cheeky release from our friends across the pond.  The movie got a huge buzz created at South by Southwest and will possibly get a wide release here.  The movie looks like a fun time with a group of, I assume, Chavs looking to stave off an alien invasion in their block.  Nick Frost is in the movie so I am definitely seeing it.  There are some apparent issues with the movie and that the kids and actors use a very, heavy accented dialogue native to the location they are shooting in.  So there are talks about subtitling the movie or even dubbing the movie, which would probably kill any success the movie might have since people don’t like to read at the movies.

That wraps up the month of July for movie releases and next I will talk about the closing to the summer movie experience with August releases.
