Trailers of the Week – The Trip and Beginners

Another week down, another set of trailers for upcoming movies for you to catch.  I saw both of these trailers before the screening of The Tree of Life and found them wonderful and entertaining.  First is a road trip movie with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.  The next is a more touching melodrama from director Mike Mills.

The Trip:

“When Steve Coogan is asked by The Observer to tour the country’s finest restaurants, he envisions it as the perfect getaway with his beautiful girlfriend. But, when she backs out on him, he has no one to accompany him but his best friend and source of eternal aggravation, Rob Brydon.”

This looks like a really funny movie.  Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are incredibly funny actors and their voice impersonations are fantastic.  This movie is actually a very short run, 6 episode series that premiered in the UK in 2010 which has been edited together to give us some of the best parts of the series.  The series and movie is just a large improvisational skit for Coogan and Brydon to just banter back and forth with humorous results.

Beginners:

“A young man is rocked by two announcements from his elderly father: that he has terminal cancer, and that he has a young male lover.”

A stellar cast with Christopher Plummer, Ewan McGrego, and Mélanie Laurent (who you might remember from Inglourious Basterds) all bringing together a heartfelt comedy and drama about a son trying to figure out a father that he never really knew about.  I am excited to see director Mike Mills come back and director a follow up to his first feature film, Thumbsucker.  I love his subtle comedy and little touches on family struggles.  The trailer is very endearing and any movie that also includes a dog as part of the main cast is just too easy to pass up.  Sidenote: fuck you Marley and Me for using a dog to sell an emotion plot point, cheap as shit film making.
