Movie of the Day – El Mariachi

I decided to keep with the previous theme of guns, music, and women.  So why not go back to the movie that launched Robert Rodriguez’s career, El Mariachi.  The epitome of rebel film making, El Mariachi pretty burst onto the scene with the help of Columbia Pictures and their penchant of giving young film makers a chance to distribute their movie.  Notice I said distribute and not finance the movie.  El Mariachi was written, directed, edited, produced, scored, and paid for by Robert Rodriguez.  His tenacity for wanting to make this movie drove him to finance it in any way shape and form.  He went through medical testing groups to get money just to get it off the ground.

El Mariachi is the beginning of what has been known as the Mariachi Trilogy, while Desperado and Once Upon A Time In Mexico being the sequel and final movie.  El Mariachi is not the prettiest looking movie of the bunch, sine it was shot on cruddy 16mm film and intended for the Mexican home video market.  The movie went to gain a cult status amongst film viewers, as the movie showcased what a creative mind can do with only $7,000 US Dollars and fuck it all attitude.

El Mariachi follows the story of a ruthless criminal, Azul, and the local drug lord, Moco.  Azul breaks out of jail and vows to take revenge on Moco, who put him in jail.  Azul is armed with his signature guitar case full of guns.  This is not the hero of the movie, but rather sets up what will happen to our intrepid hero, El Mariachi.  Again no name given for the hero as in the second and third movie.  Our hero, El, is the new guy in town who is looking for work as a Mariachi.  He is also carrying a guitar and case.  So Moco knowing that Azul is after him, sends his thugs to kill Azul, but mistake El for Azul since they are both carrying a guitar case.  So El kills the guys in self defense and this is where the fun begins.

After dispatching the thugs, El takes refuge in a bar run by a woman named Domino, whom he falls in love with her (real fucking quick). Anyways, Azul comes into the bar getting info and accidentally leaves with El’s guitar case.  The thugs capture El and then is set free after being clears be Moco.  Azul finds out that Domino knows where Moco lives and takes her hostage and drives to Moco.  And a giant fucking shoot out happens between Moco, Azul and El, who happened to come back to the Moco’s after realizing Domino was missing and Azul had taken her hostage.

Kind of a convoluted plot, but who gives a shit.  El Mariachi has some fantastic action pieces and the way that Rodriguez goes all in with his hand really helps elevate the movie to that grindhouse status it has achieved.

The movie is not the prettiest or most interesting thing out there.  Even though this was shot back in 1992, the movie still has this classic cult quality to it.  One must admire what Robert Rodriguez was able to do with the budget and constraints he had as a film maker.  Using cheap locations, hire locals to play in the movie, and having no one tell him what he can and can’t do helped usher in this rebel film making.  This should be a must for any young film maker that is wanting to get started making movies.  The movie is jammed pack with action and all the trimmings that make a cult movie what it is.

If you can, rent the movie rather than watching it online.  One of the main reasons to rent it is that you can listen to the commentary track and hear Rodriguez talk about every small detail of the movie, down to financing and making the effects of the movie.  It is fascinating hearing Robert talk about his trials and tribulations of making that movie.  You get a more in depth perspective of making a movie on a shoe string budget.

Movie of the Day – Desperado

Alright, there are three things that I love to see in movies.  If at least 2 of these elements are present is said movie, we are looking at an instant classic.  The three things are guns, hot latin women and Mariachi music.  So I can understand why Desperado is right up in the pantheon of movie watching.

Guns:

not only a functional gun, but an obvious metaphor

Yes, yes, yes!  Desperado has soo many fucking guns that they have to use guitar cases to house the guns and even modify them to be guns.  A guitar case full of guns, a guitar case that is a machine gun, and one that is rocket launcher.  Holy Shit!  I half expected the knives in the movie to be a functional gun as well.  The gun play in this movie is stellar.  A larger budget, a rebel film making attitude and needing to top the first movie, Desperado does that in spades.

Hot Latin Women:

Yep…done.

Mariachi Music:

As a Hispanic American, there was no way in hell that I could escape the sound of guitars, accordions, trumpets, and sombreros.  Mariachi music is as much apart of my life as white people enjoy Nickleback.   But growing up with this music, I never looked at these musicians with much envy or mystery.  But goddamn did this movie make them out to bad asses.  I would never cross a Mariachi ever in fear that he will whip out the guitar case and just start laying waste to everyone. Also the soundtrack to the movie is awesome with its mix of western and tejano influence, along with a nice opening Mariachi number.

Desperado has everything I want in a movie.  Top notch shoot outs, especially when the band gets back together for one last stand.  Salma Hayek filling in the hot latin woman quotient.  Also this was her big American movie debut.  So America…you are welcome for this.  Last is Mariachi music as the hero is a mariachi guitarist.

Movie of the Day – Half Baked

I get it.  I know very well  that today is 4/20 and that it is utterly cliche to post a stoner movie as today’s movie of the day.  But this site is all about cliches, in particular, movie cliches.  So shut it and enjoy your day.  Me?  I am going to enjoy 4/20 like every other day…by watching movies.  HA!  You thought i was going to say get high well you are wrong sucker.

Peace out!

Movie of the Day – Commando

OH FUCK YEAH!  1985 was a fantastic time to be alive, shit I was born in 1985 and you know what else happened in 1985?  COMMANDO!  Arnold Schwarzenegger doing what he does best and that is spouting iconic one-liners and killing what is the equivalent of a small occupational army.  I love 80′s action films, string thin story lines, awesome one-liners, continuity errors galore and most of all, one man killing machines!  Commando is a man’s movie.  If you can’t love this movie for what it is then turn in your man card and go wait in line to see Twilight or an equally girly movie.

*start 80′s action voice over*

Are you ready…to take a journey…with one man…who has nothing to lose?  His friends were murdered…his only reason to live was taken from him….ridiculous pauses in between sentences…and now someone has to pay!

*end 80′s action voice over*

The movie is basically this for 90 minutes

Alright, lets get the plot out of the way since it will take two sentences.  Arnold plays a character by the name of Matrix (bwahahaha) who has his daughter kidnapped by a group of mercenaries or something and they want him to carry out some assassination.  Well Matrix doesn’t like that his daughter is being kidnapped and he proceeds to murder the population of an entire village of bad  guys to get his daughter back.  Done.

So now you have the standard 80′s action plot line set, now is time to fill the movie with action, exciting dialogue and Arnold being Arnold.  This is the sort of popcorn movie that I love to turn my mind off and watch with great excitement.  I am only going to talk about the highlights of this movie, so lets start with our hero and the villain.

John Matrix, former commando and loving father to a young Alyssa Milano.  John Matrix just wants to live a life of solitude and forget about his killing ways.  But when trouble comes knocking, Arnold suits up, gets his camouflage paint on (for what reason I don’t know since he is a giant of a man carrying a small gun store worth of equipment on him) and flexes his biceps in every scene.  An unstoppable killing machine who leaves swathes of bad guys in his wake.

Now who could possibly stand up to this inhuman beast.  What villain of equal proportion can go toe to toe with John Matrix.  Bennett.

I will let you guess which one is supposed to be Matrixs equal

That’s right, the dude in chain mail tanktop with the arms of an out of shape high school gym student is supposed to be scary villain who can best Matrix.  This has to be one of the most unbalanced hero/villain combination ever, almost as bad as John Lithgow and Sly Stallone in Cliffhanger.  How is this guy supposed to be the top villain in this movie?  But in 80′s action movie strides, the ensuing battle between Bennett and Matrix shows why you don’t fuck with Bennett.

The final confrontation has arguably the best death line ever.  I don’t want to spoil it, but you must check it out.

Another thing I love about the movie is the constant barrage of one-liners.  This movie has the best, nay, greatest collection of one-liners in a film ever.  It’s like they took a book of action cliche lines and just put them into a script.  Hell, I think it could use more one-liner because there are some scenes that don’t have dialogue in it.

Its time...to kill!

Have a beer, get drunk, watch this movie with friends and bask in the eternal glory that is Commando.  Did I say that it is a great movie?  Well, I LIED!  It’s the best action movie ever.

Movie of the Day – Up in the Air

” Tonight most people will be welcomed home by jumping dogs and squealing kids. Their spouses will ask about their day. Tonight they’ll sleep. The stars will wheel forth from their daytime hiding places, and one of those lights, slightly brighter than the rest, will be my wingtip passing over.”

Movies that deal with companionship or relationships tend to be one-sided.  The male or female lead tend to feel incomplete with their lives, although successful or fast-moving as their life may be, as they don’t have someone to share in their experiences.  It is always rather predictable with movies that deal with relationships in a drama, we know that eventually there will be a reconciliation with the person that they are meant to be with after some pondering over slow music and panoramic shots of beautiful vistas.  All ends up well as was intended or so we love to have happen.  Up in the Air is one of those movies that looks at delivering a different side to the act of companionship.

Jason Reitman creates a movie where our lead lives by a philosophy.  A philosophy that is living your life without ties, without people, and without someone.  Up in the Air centers around Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), who is a corporate downsizer and his travels around the country, essentially leaving a wake of unemployed people in his path.  The fact that he is a corporate downsizer is not the focus piece of the movie, but rather his travels.  Ryan has no ties, either personal or tangible, he lives out of his suitcase running from terminal to terminal and interacting briefly with those that he meets on his travels.  It’s a life filled with small moments that are just stops on his journey to his ultimate goal, 10 million flier miles.  Ryan also give motivational speeches along the way, in particular the speech you heard in the trailer sums up his life philosophy on relationships and people.  Relationships are the biggest thing weighing someone down from their goals, in his case, the 10 million flier miles.  It isn’t until he takes on a partner in his travels through the corporate America downsizing.  Here is where Ryan’s philosophy is challenged as the young upstart Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick) grills Ryan on why he chooses to live a life of isolation and why he doesn’t want to be with Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga) who is another like-minded traveler.  Alex is compatible with Ryan in every way and two seem genuinely happy when meet at different times throughout the movie.

I won’t spoil the movie for you if you haven’t seen it.  Up in the Air is a deep movie where we are presented with the opposite of a love story, one where the lead isn’t looking for love because they don’t want it.  I really liked this movie because of the subject matter it presents.  Time and time again we are given a movie that indicates that a complete life is one where we have someone special.  One whom we can share our thoughts, travels, and experiences.  There are several examples in the movie where this idea is challenge, particularly when Ryan’s sister gets married and the husband has cold feet.  We see Ryan debate internally about his decision to lead a life where his only connections happen from airport hub to airport hub.

I think the most important thing that the movie does for the viewer is make you think about your current situation.  Whether you are swan or a shark.  Living your life with someone or going at it alone.  This is where is motivational speech comes center stage.  Do you take stock in what you have, people or things and continue to live that life?  Do you cut your ties and live your life without the anchors of possession or people?  For some people, they jump from relationship to relationship, not wanting to be alone in life, wanting to share their experiences with another person.  For others, they are content with living their life without the need for companionship.  Sometimes your personal goals will never be achieved because you have to think about the other person in your life.

I absolutely loved this movie and what it discusses.  What side of the relationship issue I fall on is not relevant.  I liked the presentation and adaptation of the novel on which the movie is based on.  It is a smart and thoughtful script with a lot of humor in it as well.  George Clooney does an incredible job with his role as an isolated man.  You can see the conflict in mind as he is confronted time and time again with dealing with his life philosophy and his ultimate goal.

Movie Review – Hanna

This is my first actual movie review that I am attempting.  I try to get out to the movies when I can and when i have people to go with sometimes.  So I was very happy to find a group of people who were interested in seeing Hanna.  I first caught the trailer for this movie on the Slash Film website (an excellent film website) and was immediately hooked.  Besides the action and frenetic pace that the trailer provided, what interested me was the fact that Joe Wright was directing.  If you are unfamiliar with Joe Wright, his previous movies were Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, and The Soloist.  If you ever have seen those movies, well you might be interested in seeing what he can do with an action movie.  Most of his previous films dealt primarily with drama and weren’t demanding in the action department, so both seeing the trailer and hearing him attached as director of the movie got me interested.

So with my expectations of the movie set high with the very stylish trailer and musical pairing of The Chemical Brothers (who also do the score), I was ready to sit down and enjoy Hanna.  Boy did I ever enjoy this movie.

Movie of the Day – Gattaca

I enjoy sci-fi movies for the subject matter that they are willing to touch upon.  Most people look at sci-fi movies and think they are all about laser beams, *pew pew*, ships, aliens and intergalactic space nookie (thanks a lot Captain Kirk).  Not a lot of credit is given to sci-fi movies about the possible direction that technology can take us.  Michael Bay’s (can’t believe I am bringing him up) The Island brought to light the possibility of organ farming from clones.  The Matrix trilogy story line was based on the birth of Artificial Intelligence and what could, COULD, happen to society when AI become self aware.  In fact, apparently the only way to talk about future technology and implications that it has on our society is too make sure there is a lot of action sequences and CGI.  Guess it makes the stark reality of our future and technology an easier pill to swallow.  I am sure there are more reputable movies out that deal with serious technological advancements, but I am too lazy to go look them up or think about them.

Movie of the Day – Step Brothers

It’s Saturday.  The sun is shining, the weather is great, Dexter the beagle is outside chasing rabbits and annoying the shit out of our neighbors with his barking.  I thought about writing on a foreign film entitled “Kagemusha” but that would require me to watch the movie, analyze the structure of the story and how Akira Kurosawas’ directing and cinematography produce one his finest movie .  The climactic battle sequence is stunning and so on and so on.  After coming to my senses, I just wanted to watch a movie which is utterly hilarious, quotable and just plain mind candy.

So here it is, Step Brothers.  Will Farrel and John C. Reily teaming up again with Adam McKay in another funny comedy movie.  Anyone who watches this movie and doesn’t laugh, clearly has no soul or funny bone (which is yet to be medically and scientifically proven to exist).  I originally posted this one on my Facebook account as a Movie of the Day, so i decided to call it up to the big leagues and place it on Another Plot Device.

So in short…have a laugh today.

Movie of the Day – 28 Days Later

To be honest, I am not a huge fan of horror movies.  The current state of horror movies relies far too much on over the top gore and torture where I am just disgusted rather than scared of the movie.  Sure, horror movies are synonymous with violence and gore, but it can be used effectively or has an actual place in the movie.  Gore for the sake of gore doesn’t make a horror movie.  I want to be scared about the unknown, scared of the surroundings, and scared that there is no hope for the characters involved.  I don’t want to see creative (or non-creative) ways to kill off characters.  It just becomes a showcase for intricate ways to kill characters (Saw movies are the biggest culprit) and you care very little about the characters or story.

So with few choices in the scare department, I look towards the lovely genre that is zombie films to get both gore and a good story out of my movie experience.  Now before we go forward with the movie of the day, I am fully aware that there are two sides to the zombie debate, in particular the sides that are drawn with regards to 28 Days Later.  In the most traditional sense, 28 Days Later is not a zombie movie.  The “infected” are not dead, they are not re-animated corpses, they don’t eat their victims, and they do not shamble after their prey.  The “infected” are zombie like though, in that their sheer numbers and relentless pursuit of the main characters is zombie like.  I am listing it as a zombie movie for the sake of writing this post.

Now with that disclaimer out of the way, I can get to the reason as to why this is the Movie of the Day…

Movie of the Day – Monsters

Now for those that are on Facebook and follow my Movie of the Day posts, you will notice that I had previously selected this movie a while back, or not, whatever.  Well since this is a new medium for me to post about movies, I decided to go back and select a movie that I would love to expand on. So I decided to talk about a monster movie since those are just plain fun and settled on the aptly named, Monsters.

Monsters is one of those special monster movies that doesn’t hinge on chaos or military action set pieces.  Director Gareth Edwards created a monster movie that makes use of their presence as normal part of life.  Some people liken the movie to District 9, where aliens are a part of the everyday life in their setting, but that movie focuses on the aliens and is the driving point of that movie.  Monsters uses the alien life forms as a back drop, rather than having them as the center piece.  The aliens exist as this looming threat, but don’t necessarily make themselves seen throughout most of the movie.  They are a part of the background and normalcy in the movie, which you see throughout the movie as the people of Mexico (where it takes place) just go on about their daily lives and adjust to this presence.
